January in Richmond means two things 1) It's cold and dreary outside, yet somehow it never snows 2) The General Assembly convenes to enact new legislation. Governor Kaine and legislators have joined forces to create 100% smoke free dining throughout Virginia. The lawmakers cite the increased likelihood of respiratory ailments among patrons and especially employees of dining establishments.
According to the Virginia Department of Health 67% of Virginia restaurants are already smoke free establishments while only 58% of those in Richmond have voluntarily gone smoke free. Our research of 32 Carytown area businesses shows that we are slightly above the city average with 59% smoke free dining.
The new legislation would ban all smoking in restaurants except for those with outdoor seating, which would allow a handful of Carytown businesses to continue serving patrons that smoke.
Feelings are mixed among frequent patrons of area restaurants. Said one local "I am looking forward to the day when I can visit Richmond's restaurants and bars and not leave with smoky clothes, hair and watery eyes."
